HAC Hydraulic Abrasive Cutting System to help with Wind Turbine Demolition

HAC Hydraulic Abrasive Cutting System is an abrasive cutting system that is powered by hydraulics. It uses high pressure water and abrasive sand. The system is used for cold-cutting applications in various fields of industry. What are the benefits of the abrasive cutting system for wind turbine demolition?

The system is used for cold-cutting applications in various fields of industry, where heat-generating cutting methods cannot be used. The cutting system is therefore suitable for tasks where sparks must be avoided. For example, the abrasive cutting system is used to extinguish fires safely through walls, doors, and ceilings in field of rescue sector. Thanks to its compact size, the abrasive cutting system can be installed on an excavator, crane, or truck, so it is always on site and acts as a mobile cutting system. The system takes the necessary hydraulic power from the machine where it is installed. The system is also shown to have potential for use in the wind energy sector.

Effective Abrasive Cutting System on site, without sparks

The size and number of wind turbines has increased during the last couple of decades. Wind turbine blades can now be over 75 meters long and the tower almost 180 meters high (Suomen Tuulivoimayhdistys). Transporting such a massive power station requires special transport, which takes up a lot of space and resources. When a wind turbine needs to be replaced or modified, the most cost-effective solution is to re-install a new wind turbine to the same location. Building a new wind turbine in the countryside requires environmental planning, and it also takes time to obtain a permission. Wind turbines are often in the middle of nature where a spark-free system is necessary to avoid forest fires.

When an old wind turbine is replaced by a new one, the old one is demolished to make way for a new, and often more powerful, one. It is almost impossible and extremely expensive to transport a demolished wind turbine in one piece from the demolition site, which brings us to the unique spark-free HAC Hydraulic Abrasive Cutting System, that allows cutting the turbine in parts that fit on a standard truck. The abrasive system could be installed on a machine that is already on site making the system ready for use when needed.

HAC Hydraulic Abrasive Cutting System
The system has two abrasive material tanks. It also has an abrasive pistol and hose reel, patented DYNASET valves, and a HPW Hydraulic High Pressure Water Pump.

The cutting power is generated by high pressure water that contains abrasive sand. The system’s pistol delivers high-pressure water boosted with abrasive sand to the surface at high pressure. The pistol’s control is carried out with wireless technology. The abrasive sand is added to the water stream directly to the pressure line, increasing its kinetic energy compared to systems where the sand is added to water in the pistol. As a result, the HAC Hydraulic Abrasive Cutting System is efficient. Users can cut even through metal with 320 bar pressure, while regular cold cutting systems may require even 4000 bar pressure.

The system has two abrasive material tanks, which means that while one is in use, the second can be refilled simultaneously thanks to DYNASET’s patented valve structure. This allows non-stop working with the system. It also has an abrasive pistol and hose reel, patented DYNASET valves, and a hydraulic high-pressure water pump. The system is powered reliably by the carrier vehicle’s or machine’s engine via hydraulics. The system requires from hydraulics 115 l/min flow at 230 bars.
