WORD Rock Drills is a U.S.-based manufacturer of rock drilling equipment and attachments headquartered in Elon, North Carolina. Founded in 2006, the company designs and supplies drilling solutions that can be mounted on excavators, skid steers, and other machinery, as well as standalone drilling units.

WORD Rock Drills focuses on providing versatile and efficient drilling equipment for industries such as construction, infrastructure, solar energy installation, and foundation work. Their systems enable contractors to convert existing machinery into capable drilling platforms that can handle demanding rock and ground conditions on job sites around the world.

For dust suppression, the company has relied on the DYNASET HPW Hydraulic High Pressure Water Pump, specifically the HPW250 model, for many years. The concept is straightforward: the drill operator can adjust water flow and pressure directly from the control panel, which can be either remote-operated or integrated with the drill unit itself. High-pressure water is delivered to the drill hole together with compressed air, effectively controlling dust during drilling operations.

“Water pumps are commonly used in our drills. Last year, in 2025, we sold around 150 drilling units, and approximately 125 of them were equipped with an HPW pump,” says George Novotny, Service Manager.

Novotny brings extensive experience to the industry. He has worked with drilling equipment for most of his career and has been with WORD Rock Drills for three years. Prior to that, he gained hands-on experience working on oil drilling rigs.

“I’ve actually done drilling in every state,” George summarizes.

In addition to dust suppression, the high-pressure water pump is also used for power washing. Drilling operations typically leave equipment covered in dust and mud, and the pump allows operators to quickly clean the drill rig after work. Regular cleaning helps keep the equipment in good condition and prevents dirt from accumulating on critical components.

Attention to the Small Details and built to last

Drilling rigs are built to be durable and relatively simple machines, designed for reliability and easy service in demanding job site conditions. At the same time, the equipment is continuously evolving as new improvements are introduced.

One of the latest design choices at WORD Rock Drills is the use of a traditional fixed quick coupler. While modern couplers are available, they often require the drill to be tilted significantly before it can be released. The fixed coupler provides a simpler solution: operators can use the excavator to position the drill and manually detach it from the boom when needed.

Customers have been very satisfied with the performance of the HPW Hydraulic High Pressure Water Pump.

“They are very reliable. Occasionally we receive inquiries about the pump suction not working, but the cause is usually simple,” Novotny explains. “Sometimes mud dauber wasps build nests in the water inlet. Once the inlet is cleaned, the pump works normally again.”
