The waste management and recycling industry is undergoing a transformation in which energy efficiency, low emissions, and occupational safety play an increasingly important role. Two Finnish technology companies, Tana and DYNASET, are helping meet these demands.
Tana Oy is one of the world’s leading developers and suppliers of mobile equipment for solid waste management. Founded in 1971, the company is known for its innovative waste shredders, landfill compactors, and disc screens, which are used in more than 50 countries. A long history, strong product development expertise, and high quality have made the company a respected player in the industry. In Finland, the company’s influence is reflected in the fact that landfill compaction is commonly referred to as “tanaaminen” within the waste management sector.
When Tana developed the new electric-powered TANA Hammerhead ET waste shredder to meet growing customer demands for sustainability and efficiency, it also needed a dust control solution that would support the machine’s electric operating environment. The chosen solution was the DYNASET EPW-DUST High Pressure Dust Suppression System, powered by the DYNASET EPW Electric High Pressure Water Pump, AC model.
The First Electric Dust Suppression System Integrated into a Hammerhead
The EPW-DUST system was integrated into the TANA Hammerhead ET, a track-mounted, electric-powered, high-capacity single-shaft waste shredder. The machine is powered by two 160 kW electric motors through hydraulic transmission. The ET model features an auxiliary diesel engine for machine movement, while the shredding process itself is fully electric.

The need for a dust suppression and pressure washing system came directly from customers. Tana had already utilized Dynaset’s solutions in the past, so both positive user experiences and the project schedule influenced the selection.
“The project was particularly interesting for us because, although Dynaset’s systems were already familiar, this customer project provided the first opportunity to design an electric dust suppression system as part of an electric-powered machine,” Tana explains.
Effective Dust Control for Demanding Waste Processing Applications
TANA shredders process various types of waste into smaller particle sizes so that materials can be directed to recycling, energy production, or final disposal. Wood-, plastic-, and insulation-based materials in particular generate significant amounts of dust during the shredding process.
Dust is not merely a comfort issue. It affects occupational safety, air quality, and machine reliability. The DYNASET EPW-DUST High Pressure Dust Suppression System produces a fine water mist that effectively binds dust at its source. Thanks to its low water consumption and nozzles positioned close to the dust source, it suppresses dust without unnecessarily wetting the surrounding work environment. In addition to waste processing, the versatile system is suitable for applications such as demolition, street cleaning, quarrying and crushing, and firefighting.

The Hammerhead ET utilizes a two-stage nozzle solution: water mist is applied both to the actual shredding process and to the material transfer point on the conveyor. This ensures that dust is effectively suppressed at the point of generation, resulting in cleaner working conditions and improved visibility.

Advancing Toward an Electrified Machinery Industry with Finnish Expertise
In Tana’s diesel-powered shredders, dust suppression has previously been implemented using Dynaset’s hydraulic HPW-DUST High Pressure Dust Suppression System. With the introduction of the Hammerhead ET, however, a high-performance solution for an electric operating environment was required, and the EPW-DUST system met that need.
Because every TANA shredder is manufactured according to customer requirements, Dynaset’s dust suppression system can be integrated as part of the optional equipment package for a new machine. This enables application-specific solutions for different operating environments and materials.

This year, Tana celebrates its 55th anniversary and DYNASET its 40th. The project highlighted the successful collaboration between two long-established Finnish technology companies:
“Close and open cooperation enabled the successful integration of a new product and system into an electric-powered shredder in a way that supported both technical and operational objectives. The collaboration was transparent, which accelerated commissioning and ensured that the end result met practical needs even in a demanding operating environment. It is particularly valuable that two Finnish companies can combine their expertise to develop new solutions while the entire industry takes steps toward electrification and more sustainable operating models. Dynaset responded excellently to our needs, reacted flexibly throughout the different stages of the project, and adhered to the agreed schedule throughout the cooperation,” Tana states.

Easy to Use and Low Maintenance
From an equipment manufacturer’s perspective, EPW-DUST makes it possible to offer dust suppression as part of Tana’s electric-powered machines. For end users, the system provides tangible day-to-day benefits: pressure adjustment can be easily made using the adjustment screw located on the high-pressure water pump, and the system requires minimal maintenance.
The system also includes other components familiar from Dynaset’s high-pressure water solutions, such as nozzles, a 3-way valve for pressure water control, as well as a washing gun and a hose reel. As a result, the same system serves both dust suppression and machine cleaning purposes.

Dust Control for the Machines of the Future
As electric work machines become more common, their accessories must evolve as well. The combination of the TANA Hammerhead ET waste shredder and the DYNASET EPW-DUST High Pressure Dust Suppression System demonstrates that efficient dust suppression can also be successfully implemented in an electric machine environment.
The solution improves occupational safety, reduces dust emissions into the environment, and supports customers’ sustainability goals – precisely the qualities expected from the material handling solutions of the future.
